I doubt the younger generation even knows what this is anymore. With today’s abundance of storage space and high-speed internet, the days of hunting for the best compression tool, splitting files into multiple password-protected volumes, and using some shady download manager to XDCC from an IRC channel are long gone.
Fun fact: USD 150 is roughly the cost of five WinRAR licenses. I wonder if anyone actually pays for it just to avoid clicking “I accept” every time! 😆
The reason RAR files were so popular back in the day was their early support for Unicode filenames, easy multi-volume splitting, and superior compression—especially for multimedia files. It was the de facto format for pirated downloads until LZMA/7z came along.
