Jin Daily Tech Trivia: Computer Memory Prices Nearly Double in Just 4 Months
By Shee Tze Jin
Over the past few weeks, prices for RAM (especially DDR5), hard drives, and flash memory have skyrocketed — with some models nearly doubling! The main culprit? Surging demand for AI hardware that’s tightening global supply chains.
The shortage is already hitting Japan hard — major computer stores are now rationing memory, SSDs, and mechanical drives. One shop limits buyers to 8 pieces per group, while others go harsher: just 2 SSDs/HDDs and 4 sticks of RAM per purchase.
So far, we haven’t seen major price hikes in Malaysia, thanks to the MYR staying strong against other currencies. But once the U.S. government shutdown ends, things could flip fast.
If you’re planning to build a gaming rig right now… let’s just say, maybe don’t.
