Jin Daily Tech Trivia - Did you know Gabe Newell has been predicting the future for decades?

You’ve probably seen this photo online many times. This is Gabe Newell - a former Microsoft employee who left the company, founded Valve, and completely changed the way we play games.

Gabe rarely appears in the media, but when he does, his predictions about the tech industry are often uncannily accurate.

Back in the early 2000s, Gabe said:

“Piracy is a service problem, not a pricing problem.”

  • The Prediction: He believed software would eventually be distributed entirely over the internet, allowing companies to provide a better experience for gamers.

  • The Reality: At the time, almost every major company thought it would “never happen” because retail stores like Walmart and GameStop controlled the market, and people still preferred physical game boxes.

  • Outcome: Today, Steam processes an estimated $17B+ in annual sales, and physical PC games have almost completely disappeared.

Back at the 2013 DICE Summit, Gabe said:

“All the consoles are using PC graphics hardware now.”

  • The Prediction: He predicted that game consoles would eventually abandon proprietary custom chips and move toward standardized PC-based hardware.

  • The Reality: For decades, consoles used highly specialized architectures like the PS3’s Cell processor, which developers notoriously struggled to work with.

  • Outcome: The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S now run on AMD Zen 2 CPUs and RDNA graphics - essentially highly customized PC hardware. Microsoft has also announced that Project Helix, the next-generation Xbox platform, will move further toward a PC-like ecosystem instead of relying on fully custom GPU designs.

And also in 2013, during LinuxCon, Gabe said:

“Linux and open source are the future of gaming.”

  • The Prediction: He warned that Microsoft could eventually close off the Windows ecosystem, making Linux an important long-term safety net for PC gaming.

  • The Reality: Gabe spent years funding Proton - Valve’s compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux - while many people thought it was a complete waste of resources.

  • Outcome: That investment eventually made the Steam Deck possible, allowing a Linux-based handheld to run most modern PC games surprisingly well.

And Gabe now is working on BCI, brain interface and prepare to launch their steam machine very soon, and Half Life 3…

Good time to be alive !!
