Jin Daily AI Trivia : Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite now GA, Preview API shutting down by May 25
The preview model (gemini-3.1-flash-lite-preview) will be deprecated on May 11, 2026, before its final shutdown on May 25, 2026.
Users should migrate to the stable, Generally Available (GA) version: gemini-3.1-flash-lite.
The stable version (gemini-3.1-flash-lite) was released on May 7, 2026. According to Google, it is 2.5x faster, more cost-efficient, and has better instruction following compared to the previous Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite model.
Jin Rant: Typical Google. They could have simply redirected the API endpoint to the GA model, but they chose not to.
And this is a very sudden EOL - just 17 days for an endpoint - while the older gemini-2.5-flash-lite-preview API endpoint is still running alongside its GA version. (they can’t do the same for 3.1 Flash lite?)
Don’t use Google AI APIs for production. Nuff said.
